全書以名為“自由女性”的第三人稱中篇敘述為框架。該故事分為五個小節，講述安娜及其女友莫莉的生活和事業，每兩節之間夾有一連串所謂的“筆記集”，其內容取自安娜的四個筆記本（即黑色，紅色，黃色和藍色四本），如此反復四次，在最後一節“自由女性”之前還插入瞭一個獨立的“金色筆記”部分。其中黑色筆記本中記載著安娜年輕時在非洲的主活，特彆是她在當地一個左翼小團體中的活動，以及因此曆經的幻想、激情與失望。她的第一部小說《違禁的愛情》就是這段生活的産物。
