作者簡介

W. Somerset Maugham was one the twentieth century’s most popular novelists as well as a celebrated playwright, critic, and short story writer. He was born in Paris but grew up in England and served as a secret agent for the British during World War I. He wrote many novels, including the classics Of Human Bondage, Cakes and Ale, Christmas Holiday, The Moon and Sixpence, Theatre, and Up at the Villa.

從生物學角度來說，活著其實是沒有意義的。活著就是活著。一大堆細胞在運作。由嫩而老，由盛而衰。其他活物對此都沒意見，隻有人類不行，人類非得給自己的存在找一個理由，這是這種生物很奇怪的一個特徵。絕大多數人，給自己找的存在理由不外乎社會地位（艾洛特）、物質生活（伊莎貝爾）、感情（索菲）等等，找到之後就心滿意足。人類社會的形成和設計在某種程度上是為這些需求服務的。但是有少數人，腦子裏的溝迴比彆人深一些，或者經曆比較特殊，會發現自己不滿足於獲得世俗的成功和幸福，他們會問：我活著到底是為什麼？我究竟為什麼存在？然後有一股神秘的力量推動他們去找答案。這些少數人中的少數人，有可能找到答案。

幾乎所有追求終極真理的人，最後都會歸結到理性和精神的滿足。物質和肉體的滿足太容易得到和實現，因此無法持久，富足的人並不一定幸福快樂，這已經眾所周知。當然，一直處於貧睏的人除非獲得飽暖，否則無法理解上麵這句話。但是當人得到瞭滿意的物質條件，會發現就算他繼續擁有更多的物質，也無法使幸福感相應增加，幸福感反而會降低也說不定。 因此通往真正幸福的道路不在這裏。花生在吃瞭三天的生煎小籠之後就不覺得它們多麼好吃瞭。
