《源氏物語》的作者是日本平安時代（公元794-1192）的著名女文學傢紫式部（973－1015），紫式部本姓藤原，字不詳。按照日本古代婦女沒有名字的慣例，紫式部隻是後人給她寫的作品上加題上的名字。因其長兄任式部丞，而當時宮中女官往往以其父兄的官銜為名，以顯其身份，所以稱為藤式部；後來因她所寫《源氏物語》中的紫姬深為世人喜愛，遂改稱紫式部。作者生卒年月不詳，普遍認為是生於978年，死於1015年。紫式部齣身於充滿書香氣的中等貴族傢庭，是一位極富纔情的女子，其祖父等輩及兄長都是當時有名的歌人，父親更是長於漢詩和歌，對中國古典文學頗有研習。作者因此自幼得以隨父學習漢詩，並熟讀中國古代典籍，她不僅對白居易的詩有很深的造詣，而且還十分瞭解佛經和音樂。紫式部傢道中落，曾給藤原宣孝做過繼室（或側室），生女藤原賢子；丈夫去世後，依賴父兄生活，寡居十年。後由藤原道長聘為一條天皇中宮藤原彰子的侍讀女官，講解白居易的詩，在宮中供職期間，紫式部寫瞭《紫式部日記》、《紫式部集》等作品，《源氏物語》是她寫給天皇與中宮供消遣的讀物（也有的說是其對其父的作品整理加工完善得到）。
