那一天不可能去散步瞭。不錯，我們早上已經在片葉無存的灌木林中逛瞭一個鍾頭；但是，自從吃午飯的時候起（如果沒有客人，裏德太太是很早吃午飯的），鼕日的凜冽寒風就送來瞭那樣陰沉的雲和那樣透骨的雨，這就不可能再在戶外活動瞭。

　　上麵提到的伊麗莎、約翰和喬奇安娜·裏德，這時候都在休憩室裏，正簇擁在他們的母親周圍，她斜靠在爐邊的沙發上，心愛的兒女都在身旁（這忽兒既不爭吵，又不哭鬧），看上去很是快活。她沒讓我和他們在一起；她說她很遺憾，不得不叫我離他們遠一點；她真的不能把隻給知足快樂的小孩的那些特權給我，除非是白茜告訴瞭她，而且還要她自己親眼看到，我確實是在認認真真地努力培養一種更加天真隨和的性情，一種更加活潑可愛的態度——大概是更輕快、更坦率、更自然的一種什麼吧。

　　“簡，我可不喜歡吹毛求疵或者尋根究底的人；再說，小孩兒這樣打斷長輩的話，實在可怕。找個地方去坐下來。不會說討人喜歡的話，就彆多嘴。”休憩室的緊隔壁是一間小小的早餐室。我溜進瞭那間屋子。那兒有一個書架。不一會兒，我就拿到瞭一本書，我特意挑一本圖畫很多的。我爬上窗口，縮起腳，像土耳其人那樣盤腿坐著，把波紋紅昵窗簾幾乎完全拉攏，我就加倍隱蔽起來，仿佛坐在神龕裏似的。

　　還有一些部分我也不能放過，那就是下麵這些地方的荒涼海岸：拉普蘭，西伯利亞，斯匹次卑爾根⑥，新地島，冰島和格陵蘭，還有“那遼闊的北極區域，和那些陰暗地帶荒無人煙的地區；那兒是冰雪的貯藏所，經過幾百個隆鼕的積纍，已經成瞭一片堅實的冰野，像阿爾卑斯山般一峰高似一峰，冰麵晶瑩光滑，繞著地極，積聚瞭嚴寒的無窮威力”。對這些慘白色的區域，我形成瞭一個我自己的看法：朦朦朧朧，像在孩子們腦海裏沉浮的似懂非懂的概念，卻又齣奇地生動。這幾頁導言裏的文字都是和後麵的小插圖有關聯的：屹立在波濤洶湧、浪花飛濺的大海中的岩石，擱淺在荒涼海岸上的破船，還有那從雲縫間俯視沉舟的幽靈般的月亮，導言中的文字就使這些畫麵變得重要瞭。
