作者簡介

Born in Ireland, Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) was educated in Dublin & Oxford and went on to become the leading and most prominent exponent of flamboyant aestheticism. As well as his many plays, he wrote one novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray (1890), and published several volumes of poetry and criticism. He was imprisoned in 1895 for homosexual offences and after his release he died in exile in Paris. Richard Cave has edited a selection of Yeats' plays for Penguin Classics.

Grade 10 Up-"The Whole Story" format provides illustrations and annotations to the classic text. Ross's lively and sophisticated cartoons add interest, and historical information helps readers place the novel in proper context and gives insight into its characters. The problem with this attractive, glossy layout, however, is that the text and the quotes pulled from it are not always on the same page. Further, some illustrations and notations visually cut into the narrative and may distract readers. For example, a drawing appears on the first page along with the passage, "In the centre of the room, clamped to an upright easel, stood the full-length portrait of a young man of extraordinary personal beauty," but that quote does not appear until the second page of the story. Useful as a supplement to the original novel, but not a replacement for it.

安德烈·紀德（安德烈·保爾·吉約姆·紀德）（Andre Gide）1869年 11月22日，生於巴黎梅迪契街19號（今埃德萊·羅斯唐廣場2號）。他是獨生子。父親名叫保爾·紀德（Paul Gide)，任巴黎大學法學院教授。死於1880年其時他僅十一歲。他叔叔是政治經濟學者查爾斯·紀德（Charles Gide）。紀德在諾曼底孤獨地長大，在早期已成為多産作傢。1877年 入達薩街的阿爾薩斯學校讀書，數月後因“不良習慣”被學校除名。紀德從小接受兩種矛盾的教育：母親認為“孩子應當順從，而不需要明白為什麼”；父親則傾嚮於“無論做什麼事，都要嚮我解釋清楚”。1880年他的父親去世後，紀德隨母親離開巴黎，來到外祖父傢。紀德早年體弱多病，異常敏感，在母親的撫養下接受瞭清教徒式的教育，釀成瞭他的叛逆性格。1889年通過學士學位考試之後，紀德嚮錶姐瑪德萊娜求婚，但遭到拒絕。1895年他母親死後，他與他的錶親瑪德萊娜（Madeleine）結婚，但一直都隻是名義上的夫妻。母親名叫硃莉葉·隆多，是位天主教教徒。
