內容簡介

The Heart is a Lonely Hunter was Carson McCullers' first novel, written in 1940. Set in a small town in the American South, it is the story of a group of people who have little in common except that they are all hopelessly lonely. A young girl, a drunken socialist and a black doctor are drawn to a gentle, sympathetic deaf mute, whose presence changes their lives. This powerful exploration of alienation is both moving and perceptive.

作者簡介

Carson McCullers was born at Columbus, Georgia, in 1917. She published The Heart is a Lonely Hunter at the age of twenty-three. Her other works include Reflections in a Golden Eye (1941), The Member of the Wedding (1946), The Ballad of the Sad Cafe (1951), The Square Root of Wonderful (1958), a play, Clock Without Hands (1961), Sweet as a Pickle, Clean as a Pig (1964) and The Mortgaged Heart (published posthumously in 1972). She died in 1967.

卡森·麥卡勒斯，20世紀美國最重要的作傢之一，1917年2月19日生於美國佐治亞州的Columbus。29歲後癱瘓。著有《心是孤獨的獵手》、《婚禮的成員》、《黃金眼睛的映像》、《沒有指針的鍾》等小說作品。其中，《心是孤獨的獵手》在美國“現代文庫”所評齣的“20世紀百佳英文小說”中列第17位。1967年9月29日麥卡勒斯在紐約州的Nyack去世，時年50歲。
