　　Hormone levels-and hence our moods- may be affected by the weather. Gloomy weather can cause depression, but sun- shine appears to raise the spirits. In Britain, for example, the dull weather of winter drastically cuts down the amount of sunlight that is experienced which strongly affects some people. They become so depressed and lacking in energy that their work and social life are affected. This condition has been given the name SAD （Seasonal Affective Disorder）. Sufferers can fight back by making the most of any sunlight in winter and by spending a few hours each day under special, full-spectrum lamps. These provide more ultraviolet and blue- green light than ordinary fluorescent and tungsten lights. Some Russian scientists claim that children learn better after being exposed to ultraviolet light. In warm countries, hours of work are often arranged so that workers can take a break, or even a siesta, during the hottest part of the day. Scientists are working to discover the links between the weather and human beings moods and performance.
　　It is generally believed that tempers grow shorter in hot, muggy weather. There is no doubt that crimes against the person rise in the summer, when the weather is hotter and fall in the winter when the weather is colder. Research in the United States has shown a relation- ship between temperature and street riots. The frequency of riots rises dramatically as the weather gets warmer, hitting a peak around 27-30~C. But is this effect really due to a mood change caused by the heat？ Some scientists argue that trouble starts more often in hot weather merely because there are more people in the street when the weather is good.

　　IELTS（雅思）——國際英語水平測試——是由英國劍橋大學考試委員會（The University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate，UCLES）、澳大利亞教育國際開發署（IDP Educatioll A1astralia）及英國文化委員會（The British Cotmcil）聯閤開發的一種英語語言能力考試，其目的是為準備進入以英語為主導教學語言的大學和學院進修的學生或以英語為母語的國傢（目前指英聯邦國傢）的移民人士測試英語水平。英國、澳大利亞、新西蘭、加拿大、北美以及其他地區的眾多院校均采用並認可這一語言測試係統。加拿大、澳大利亞、新西蘭等國傢的移民局均將雅思考試成績作為衡量技術移民及其他類移民的英語語言能力的惟一標準。

　　從1980年開始，雅思考試在全世界迅速發展，目前已經在105個國傢設立瞭224個考點。中國大陸的北京、上海、成都、重慶、福州、廣州、杭州、濟南、南京、瀋陽、深圳、天津、武漢、西安、廈門和大連等地都設有考點，每年有數以萬計的人員參加此項考試。

　　雅思考試包括兩類：

　　培訓類（General Training）

　　目前較多適用於移民

　　學術類（Academic）

　　目前較多適用於留學

　　雅思考試全程時間2小時55分鍾（包括聽力部分填寫答題紙的10分鍾時間）。

　　一、聽力部分（General Training和Academic試捲一緻）

　　考生通常會聽到4段語音（獨白部分及兩人或多人對話部分），共有38-42道題目。考生將隻聽到一次語音，所以考生韆萬彆等待語音結束纔作答（不要迴頭作答）。考生可把答案先寫在試捲上，30分鍾會話結束後，再利用額外10分鍾譽寫在答題紙上。4段語音的前兩段中，內容一般以生活及社會狀態、人際關係等不同情況模擬為主，後兩段則針對具教育性、學術性、世界性的主題進行探討，以對答（敘述）為主，但因其非常具有實際性、常識性，所以考生不必鑽牛角尖。在會話進行中，考生需邊聽邊記錄所聽到的重點答案，記在問捲上（非答案捲），以免忘記或漏掉答案。
