Patricia Highsmith is the author of classics such as Strangers on a Train and The Talented Mr Ripley. Born in Texas, she spent much of her life in England, France and Switzerland. She died in 1995 in Locarno, Switzerland.

 

電影原 著《鹽的代價》（The Price of Salt）是《天纔雷普利》作者派翠西亞·海史密斯在1952年匿名發錶的中篇小說，直到40年後她纔承認自己是作者。故事講述年輕女孩特芮絲在紐約 之都追逐戲劇錶演夢想，卻隻能在百貨公司做售貨員。某日她和身陷婚姻危機的金發中年 主婦卡羅爾在百貨公司偶遇，對現狀和環境都感到絕望的兩人開始書信往返、電報傳情，甚至公路旅行，終發現彼此找到瞭真愛。然而在當時社會（50年代美 國）這是不被允許的，特芮絲的男友認為她隻是一時迷惘，卡羅爾的丈夫則請私傢偵探調查取證，希望在離婚訴訟讓中卡羅爾一無所有。考驗兩位女性的時刻終於到 來：在強大的社會壓迫下她們能否堅守內心，不計代價的把感情路走到底？
