最後蘇聯先退瞭下來，這充分體現瞭蘇聯的理智和清醒，但是這絕不會是蘇聯的勝利，因為他先走下瞭獨木橋。不過與彼此都淹死相比，這是蘇聯可有的選項中最好的選擇（美國沒有退路的因素）。蘇聯的失敗不是因為撤瞭導彈，而是忘瞭兩個勢均力敵的對手如果一方真打算完全置對方於死地，那他自己的失敗就注定瞭。永遠不要斷瞭你最強競爭者的退路。
