主角小灰鼠追著各種動物的尾巴，真誠而禮貌地詢問“Do you want to be my friend?”，而動物的另一頭則藏在翻頁後，讓孩子忍不住根據尾巴去猜想動物，然後去翻頁驗證自己的猜想。全書隻有2句，封麵標題“Do you want to be my friend？”和結尾小灰鼠的新同伴“YES”，其中的篇幅沒有任何文字，充滿彈性，讓孩子發揮想象為小灰鼠和其他動物編寫它們的對話。

與其他版本相比，卡爾爺爺故意淡化小灰鼠找朋友被拒的過程，留下圖畫讓孩子看圖說話。
