我把1933到1938年這五年戀愛時期，概括為甜甜蜜蜜的五年，在甜甜蜜蜜之中摻入一些酸味，也許就更顯得甜蜜瞭吧。在我這方麵雖然沒有使鄧懿感到疑慮的事情，但遇到過一些人為我提親說媒。初入燕京時，我的姨母就曾想把我舅父的女兒說閤給我。當時不懂什麼近親不婚的道理，但認為婚姻大事應當由自己選擇，所以婉言謝絕瞭。在輔仁時，柯燕齡先生也曾想把湖北藏書傢徐行可先生的女兒給我，我也謝絕瞭。還在燕京國文專修班的時候，容庚先生曾想把他的得意弟子、一位比我高一班的女生介紹給我，先從側麵瞭解她的想法。這位女生錶示，她將來非博士不嫁。後來她果然嫁給金陵大學的一位教授劉博士瞭。此事是多年以後朋友講給我聽，我纔知道的。可是，周一良以後不也成為博士瞭嗎？父親對我的教育是非常保守的，可是在婚姻方麵他卻嚮來不加乾涉，這樣就省去瞭很多矛盾。
戀人之間不管如何相愛，總不免會有一些摩擦和誤會。有一天晚上，我和鄧懿在二院女生宿捨門口，因為有什麼事情存在誤會，沒有能夠澄清，可已經到瞭關門的時間，隻好分手瞭。我那時忽然想起黃仲則的兩句詩：“如此星辰非昨夜，為誰風露立中宵。”於是就想試一試“風露立中宵”的滋味，在二院關門熄燈以後，仍在門口獨自徘徊不去。後來校衛隊來巡邏，覺得我可疑，經過一番盤問以後，就把我帶迴男生宿捨去瞭。
