內容簡介

　　本書為*一代中國社會學傢陶孟和先生與其同學梁宇皋閤作的作品，以晚清民初的中國社會為背景，以社會學的觀察為視角，典型的刻畫瞭那個時代中國農村和城市的一個基本結構麵貌；尤為重要的是本書前麵有英國學者霍布豪斯作序，霍氏主張社會學應對人類精神生活與社會結構之間的關係開展實證的研究，尤其重視社會調查的研究方法，並曾在《形而上學的國傢論》一書中用專門章節來論述社會調查問題，陶孟和受此影響頗深。

作者簡介

　　陶孟和(1887-1960)，原名履恭。社會學傢，祖籍浙江紹興，師從社會學傢韋斯特馬剋(E.A.Westermarck)和霍布豪斯(L.T.Hobhouse)，並與人類學大師馬林諾夫斯基(B.Ma2linowski)是同學，1913年獲社會學博士學位，後曾任商務印書館館編輯，他從1949年10月起擔任中國科學院副院長。

　　《Village and Town Life in China》：
　　Again， the village elders and literati， who are at the same time officers of the temple， are recognized by officials of the central government. These and the Chi—yuen are the connecting links， in some cases extremely weak indeedj between the village and the central government. In a word， externally the village temple represents the government of the village. It enters into complicated relations both hostile and friendly for the village. It is responsible for the conduct of the villagers to outsiders.It is also nominally responsible to the central government for the good government of the village.
　　But the chief importance of the village temple lies in.the part it plays in the internal life of the village. Although the rfiction of a corporation witb its perpetual succession and common seal is unknown to the Chinese villager， yet the Chinese village temple is not unlike an English municipal corporation. It enjoya perpetual existence. It acts through officers， who are annually elected， It owns property. It can buy and sell and enter into contracts. I have compared it above to the English town hall. In many respects， however， it resemoles the English county council.It has about the same sort of administrative functions， such as education （if not already taken up by the ancestral halls）， police， repairs of roads， etc.
