作者簡介

Denys Cazet is the author and illustrator of more than 25 picture books for children, including Never Spit On Your Shoes, winner of the California Young Readers Medal.
The books about Minnie and Moo are his first for beginning readers. He was inspired to tell stories about the silly cow best-friends when he passed a herd of cows in which all but two were facing the same way. The other two stood next to each other, facing in the opposite direction from the rest of the cows. He immediately dubbed the two nonconformists Minnie and Moo and imagined the adventures two cows who were loyal friends rather than followers of the herd. Mr. Cazet is currently writing I Can Read Books featuring Elvis the Rooster from the farm on which Minnie and Moo live.

Mr. Cazet was an elementary school teacher for 25 years, and has also been a school librarian and elementary school media specialist. He remains active in his local elementary school parent and advisory committees. A California native, Mr. Cazet lives with his family in the foothills of the Napa Valley.

"The zany bovines are at it again. This time, wearing trench coats, fedoras, and dark sunglasses, they head for the bank to ask for some money to help out their farmer. The cows bear an uncanny resemblance to the notorious criminals the Bazooka sisters and cause quite a stir in town. However, all's well that ends well down on the farm. Minnie and Moo are armed with impeccable comic timing and are "wanted" by kids everywhere. However, the many Bonnie and Clyde-like references here might be beyond most of the fans of the series, resulting in some confusion and lost jokes. Overall, though, the lively action and colorful artwork should appeal to newly independent readers."

圖畫書比較多是為3~8歲的孩子設計編寫，在閱讀時鼓勵由大人協助親子共讀，因此在故事的發展上就比較少考量文字和句子的長度，而純文字的小說閱讀的對象本來就是已經建立獨立閱讀習慣的大孩子。圖像為主的圖畫書和純文字的小說中間缺少瞭一種可以循序漸進讀物，所以1957年開始發展的Early/Beginning reader這些係列，補足瞭這塊齣版圖譜，讓圖像閱讀和文字閱讀中間有瞭一個美好的緩坡。這一群被稱為橋梁書 （Bridging Books）的齣版品，又可以分為兩個階段，一是銜接圖畫書之後的Early/Beginning reader係列，插畫仍然占比較重要的比例，文字和故事結構簡潔易懂，在字數和句子的長度上都有嚴謹的考量。另外就是文字漸多插圖僅為輔助的Early Chapter Book或是Chapter Book，這類型齣版品故事大都與孩子們的生活相關，運用幽默生活化的故事吸引孩子們閱讀的興趣，簡單的章節分段，讓還在適應純文字閱讀的孩子可以很快的讀完一個章節，不會有太大的壓力。這些橋梁書在循序建立孩子閱讀興趣和信心上都有極重要的貢獻。

農場主付不起賬單瞭，哞很擔心，怕農場主無心工作，農場會保不住。忽然他想到，可以問銀行要錢，海報上是這麼宣傳的。米妮和哞穿西裝打領帶來到銀行，寫瞭張紙條說：請給我一些錢，遞給業務員，被誤以為是打劫銀行的，鬧瞭一係列笑話。

字數和句子的長度的考量，讓這些給孩子們初學獨立閱讀的讀物，肩負著學習閱讀和享受閱讀的雙重任務。當然在母語非英語的地區，這些係列也被用來做語言學習的教材，很多齣版社也會在封麵上標示閱讀年齡，各傢齣版社在編輯階段也多嚮教育專傢請益，在書店裏麵我們直接稱他們為「語言學習讀本」，整體看來似乎這些讀本的存在都是為瞭學習，不過HarperCollins的編輯可不是如此想，在接受《齣版者周刊》的訪問時，該齣版社負責的編輯強調他們規劃這一係列的讀物，主要的目的是讓讀者可以享受閱讀，和閱讀所帶來的一切喜悅，並不是教孩子如何讀書！
