《月亮和六便士》的情節並不復雜，寫的是一個英國證券交易所的經紀人，本已有牢靠的職業和地位、美滿的傢庭，但卻迷戀上繪畫，像“被魔鬼附瞭體”，突然棄傢齣走，到巴黎去追求繪畫的理想。他的行徑沒有人能夠理解。他在異國不僅肉體受著貧窮和飢餓煎熬，而且為瞭尋找錶現手法，精神亦在忍受痛苦摺磨。經過一番離奇的遭遇後，主人公最後離開文明世界，遠遁到與世隔絕的塔希提島上。他終於找到靈魂的寜靜和適閤自己藝術氣質的氛圍。他同一個土著女子同居，創作齣一幅又一幅使後世震驚的傑作。在他染上麻風病雙目失明之前，曾在自己住房四壁畫瞭一幅錶現伊甸園的偉大作品。但在逝世之前，他卻命令土著女子在他死後把這幅畫作付之一炬。通過一心追求藝術、不通人性世故的怪纔，毛姆探索瞭藝術的産生與本質、個性與天纔的關係、藝術傢與社會的矛盾等等引人深思的問題。同時本書也引發瞭人們對擺脫世俗束縛逃離世俗社會尋找心靈傢園這一話題的思考，關於南太平洋小島的自然民風的描寫也引人嚮往。

1892年初，他去德國海德堡大學學習瞭一年。在那兒，他接觸到德國哲學史傢昆諾·費希爾的哲學思想和以易蔔生為代錶的新戲劇潮流。同年返迴英國，在倫敦一傢會計師事務所當瞭六個星期的練習生，隨後即進倫敦聖托馬斯醫學院學醫。為期五年的習醫生涯，不僅使他有機會瞭解到底層人民的生活狀況，而且使他學會用解剖刀一樣冷峻、犀利的目光來剖視人生和社會。他的第一部小說《蘭貝斯的麗莎》，正是根據他從醫實習期間的所見所聞寫成的。

書的質感很好纔看瞭一點點看原版書需要耐心啊

毛姆的文字有一種功力，宛若思特裏剋蘭德的繪畫那般，傾盡瞭全力的描述，把讀者帶入瞭一個拋棄一切而追逐藝術的精神境界。也許，沒有完全帶入，隻是在某個瞬間，如一束陽光照亮瞭讀者的心。透過這書陽光，我看到瞭天空的一角。

稍微打開一看，英文原版還是有點難度。外國書還是一緻的缺點，紙張非常差。鋼筆寫個字基本就透過去瞭。
