作者簡介

Michael Ondaatje was born in Sri Lanka in 1943. In the 1950s he moved to England, and went to school in south London. In 1962 he emigrated to Canada, where he has lived ever since. His books include his memoir, Running in the Family, numerous collections of poetry, and five novels. Introducer Biography: Pico Iyer's books include Video Night in Kathmandu and Falling off the Map.

一段愛情，在戰火中燃燒，逾越瞭道德，改變瞭戰局。艾馬殊（拉爾夫•費因斯 Ralph Fiennes 飾）是一個曆史學者，跟隨探險傢來到撒哈拉沙漠考察，結識瞭繪製地圖的飛機師傑佛和他妻子凱瑟琳（剋裏斯汀•斯科特•托馬斯 Kristin Scott Thomas 飾）。凱瑟琳的纔氣和美麗讓艾馬殊深深著迷，兩人在沙漠一個幽深洞穴參觀壁畫時，更加發現彼此誌趣相投。

　　他用手把右邊的臉頰推迴到昨晚以前的模樣，僵在那兒從一數到十。整個上午他就重復這些動作——接下來天天如此——可一鬆手，又塌瞭。他想告訴自己這是因為躺在床上的睡姿不對，或者隻是一覺醒來皮膚皺瞭，可最終他斷定是中風。他的父親就是在四十年代初因中風而癱瘓的，所以當他自己也步人老年後，就跟我說過好幾次：“我不要像他那樣，我可不要那麼躺著，我最怕那樣。”他告訴我當時他如何在早晚上下班路上去醫院看望父親：每天得點兩次香煙，再插到父親嘴裏，到晚上，就坐在床頭，讀意第緒語報紙給他聽，無助的山德爾。羅斯就這麼躺著不能動彈，唯有香煙聊以慰藉。這樣撐瞭將近一年，1942年的某個深夜，第二次中風纔結束瞭他的生命。而我那每天去醫院兩次的父親，就坐在他床頭，看著他死去。

　　父親珍愛的羅萊剋斯手錶也打算帶走，猶豫片刻，還是作罷。它的作為機械的精美固然強烈吸引著我，但我不願意帶價值過高的東西惹人注意。從實用性考慮，我平時用的秒錶和帶報時鈴的卡西歐塑料錶已足夠瞭，或者不如說這兩樣好用得多。我轉念把羅菜剋斯放迴書桌抽屜。

這個版本的不錯，除瞭字稍小以外。
