傑西卡·羅森（Jessica Rawson）教授在大英博物館工作二十餘年，長期擔任大英博物館東方古物部主任，1994年後又執教於牛津大學中國藝術與考古專業教授，是目前中國藝術與考古領域最為活躍的西方學者之一。自從學生時代起，她就緻力於通過物質文化來研究古代中國。在過去三 十五年的學術生涯中，她試圖瞭解常齣土於墓葬中的青銅器、玉器及其他工藝品是如何被使用的，從而進一步去理解這些器物的製作造者的技藝、生活和信仰。
本文集收錄羅森教授的研究論文17篇，內容涵蓋青銅器（4篇）、復古維新（3篇）、墓葬（5篇）、中西交通（2篇）、裝飾係統（3篇）五個方麵，大部分完成於2000年之後，尚為首次以中文結集發錶。通過這些文章，羅森教授希望能夠和對古代中國有興趣的讀者來分享她的思考和見解。其中許多文章源自她在牛津大學的講課。
